Hormones

Hormones

– Hormones are chemical substances that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.

– After being made in one part of the body , they travel to other parts of the body where they help control cells and organs do their work.

– Many hormones are secreted by special glands , such as thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland.

– Hormones are essential for every activity of life , including the processes of digestion , metabolism , growth , reproduction , and mood control.

– For example , insulin is a hormone that’s made in the pancreas. When it’s released into the blood , insulin helps regulate how the cells of the body use glucose for energy.

– There are many types of hormones that act on different aspects of bodily functions and processes. Some of these include:

– Growth and development.

– Metabolism – how your body gets energy from the foods you eat.

– Sexual function.

– Reproduction.

– Mood.

– Maintenance of body temperature.

– They also maintain chemical levels in the bloodstream to help achieve homeostasis , which is a state of stability or balance within the body. For example , when a room’s temperature drops , the thermostat responds by turning on the heat. The room then returns to the ideal temperature , and the heater turns off , keeping the conditions relatively constant.

– Endocrine glands , which are special groups of cells , make hormones. The major endocrine glands are the pituitary , pineal , thymus , thyroid , adrenal glands , and pancreas.

– Hormones are powerful. It takes only a tiny amount to cause big changes in cells or even your whole body.

– These organs secrete hormone in microscopic amounts and it takes only very small amounts to bring about major changes in the body.
